Every year countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). The event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. A blood service that gives patients access to safe blood and blood products in sufficient quantity is a key component of an effective health system.

Who can donate?
According to WHO, adults aged 18 to 65 years old who are in good health condition are qualified to donate blood. Their weight should be at least 50 kg, must be in good physical condition, should be well rested and hydrated, and should pass the initial blood sampling screening.

Who can’t donate?
Healthcare professionals will refuse a donation if you have diseases like HIV, hepatitis, etc. Also, they will not allow you to donate if you have low or high blood pressure, an illegal drug user or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, recently underwent a minor dental procedure, recently have a tattoo done with in the last six months, or if you have cold or flu, or any other kind of infection.

Donating blood regularly has many health benefits not just for the receiver but for the donor also. All aspiring donors get a free physical examination and blood testing before they are cleared to donate.
