Chapter Two Summarized and Applied

Chapter two in Telling the Story was about the rapid growth of news, various news formatting and the public’s approach to news. After reading the chapter, there is no doubt in my mind that this fact is true: technology has changed the way people live. With the rapid growth in technology, everything has changed, and chapter two describes how it has drastically changed the news.

Technology effects how journalists write. The legacy news — as described in chapter two — was the primary source for readers one-hundred years ago. Today, news is distributed faster through smartphones, tablets and television; so naturally, technology has become citizens’ primary go-to for the news. People who read the newspaper are wanting elaborations on yesterday’s news, not fresh events that have already been seen on television. With this in mind, journalists have had to change their writing styles, telling stories in a way that meets the needs of the readers.

My take-home from this chapter is to never stop learning about the news. News is distributed in many different ways, so it is important to understand the various techniques used to circulate information. After reading this chapter, I feel obligated to master digital media, web design and other necessities for news. Understanding these things will not only ensure that I have a job after graduation, but it will also enhance the way I work. With the news growing side-by-side with technology, familiarizing myself with technology is crucial.
