I consider myself a typical Bay Area progressive who supports reasonable restrictions on the extreme gun culture that wracks our society. Supporters of Proposition 63 — this article, and even Fox News — say it simply requires an “instant background check” for those wishing to purchase ammunition, which sounds quite reasonable. No store ammo for felons, OK. But when I read the actual measure, I found that claim is disingenuous. The law would require individual ammunition buyers to first obtain a four-year permit from the California Department of Justice, and pay up to $50 for that permit.
Come on. Let the people vote on the merits of the actual initiative, not a version spun to sweeten it.
