Good article.

When I saw the title, I immediately thought of Saves the Day and that guy’s BRUTAL lyrics. Even back then, several female friends of mine who were fans of Saves the Day wondered aloud whether the guy was serious or not…they couldn’t understand why such a meek dude touting/presenting himself as a “nice guy” (or if not the classic “nice guy” than the embittered “victim” archetype that emo frontmen established and perfected) would write such gruesome disgusting stuff. So much of it is “if I can’t have you then I’ll kill or hurt you.”
I liked the article but I wish it went longer and deeper, just because there are so many other examples. Remember that Used song? “with my foot on your neck/I’ve finally got you right where I want you.”
I grew up in Brampton where the only local band to “make it” was Moneen, and while Kenny’s lyrics didn’t go as far into sadosexism as some of his peers, he definitely went all out with the tortured emo frontman thing. Even a cursory glance at Moneen song titles now makes me roll my eyes.

Good stuff and well researched. I wish this stuff was discussed more widely at the time.
