Its very much the same reason that big companies OSS stuff nowadays e.g. Google’s TensorFlow is OSS. It helps establish internal standards (which are there to get stuff done) as industry best, because in the absence of the making internal stuff public you will always have friction of internal vs. external best practices. So OSS whenever you can.
Most importantly, asynchronous communication lets you batch most of your communication into a single sitting. You can throw on some music and jam through dozens — or in my case hundreds — of discussions, without the stress of jumping from one time-boxed meeting to the next.
After eight months of hard work, we’re so excited to announce that we’ve recently launched Solid, BuzzFeed’s CSS and component library. It’s been an amazing journey of collaborating, negotiating, experimenting, and “roadshow-ing” with what has become the fundamental design patterns for BuzzFeed products across the web.
