When treadmill running season comes along (aka hot enough outside you could cook an egg on the sidewalk, or cold enough to convince you to move more south), another netflix series binge watching also occurs. The series I decided to finally start watching was Queer Eye after feeling really out of the loop. I expected a cute show where five gay guys come and flip your whole life around (because you’re a mess and need five gay guys to tell you so) and everything is rainbows and daisies afterwards. That is not what I got from this first episode, where the fab five travel to Gay, Georgia to help remake a mother and her struggling gay son. I did not expect to become emotional while watching this show (especially while running on the treadmill) but the fab five were able to show the unfailing love of the church as well as the excepting love of a mother. The lady they were remaking, Miss. Tammye, is a devoted lady of the church but the church is not as devoted to accepting her gay son, Miles. As the fab five work their magic through the town, the town starts learn and accept everyone because “God is love.” Many people tend to fear what they have not experience but by the fab 5 expressing their culture, the church comes to understand that they are people of God just as everyone else in the church. The touching part for me was when Miles finally felt accepted in his childhood church due to the fab five opening the eyes of the people of Gay, Georgia. On top of the town accepting Miles, Miles finally started to accept himself due to the new confidence the fab five helped him build along the way. The Fab Five first helped him restyle his whole closet in order to dress the part and secondly gave him a fresh new look at the salon. Lastly, they helped Miles get back into singing through joining a gay church choir. Being apart of a group and being around similar people can help anyone, not necessarily gay people, feel more confident to express who they truly are and build solid relationships with likeminded people.
