The Link Between Marketing & Your Comfort Zone

One out of the numerous reasons why Marketing interests me so much is the fact that it brought me out of my comfort zone, thus widening my scope.

When I was younger, I never thought that was what my future career would be in. Like many of my other friends in Elementary school, we thought we would grow up to be big celebrities, movie stars, astronauts and other similar jobs.

As my career choices began becoming a little bit more realistic in middle school, I thought I was destined to become a website designer. Seeing as though I was a bit of a nerd, and still am in some ways, I spent a lot of time on my laptop figuring out how to create a website. When I was thirteen, I coded and created my first one.

During the time that I was in middle school, I was so shy that if someone even said hi to me at school, I would stare at the ground and scurry away from them. Having that strong of an introvert personality, I thought that this would be my future career, figuring that I would just be behind the scenes of a web design company, sitting at a desk and not having to talk to too many people. It was perfect for me.

High school was the first time that I took an introductory business course. And I loved it. That was the first time that I figured out what I actually wanted to pursue as a career.

University was when I really became interested in Marketing. I enjoyed learning about the concepts, but my comfort zone was still so small that I wasn’t sure if I would even be successful if I tried to start a career in it.

Throughout the four years of university, I learned that Marketing is something that is shared, to be enjoyed by others. It is a very public field, much like music. Imagine how sad it would be in Mozart or Beethoven just kept their music to themselves, never publicly releasing it. Marketing is the same way.

No matter which area of Marketing you are a part of (branding, retail management, sales, etc.), it is primarily for public consumption. Each section takes a certain type of person. In my experience, Marketing helped me break through the barriers and come out of my shell.
