IDP means Internally Displaced People. They are people who are forced out of their homes in their home country due to certain circumstances.

According to the United Nations Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), are “persons or groups of persons who have been forced or obliged to flee or to leave their homes or places of habitual residence, in particular as a result of or in order to avoid the effects of armed conflict, situations of generalized violence, violations of human rights or natural or human-made disasters, and who have not crossed an internationally recognized state border.”

When people are displaced from their communities, the children lose access to education as they have to settle in places or communities with no access to education for them. They may settle in different areas temporarily so an educational system cannot be set up immediately. The immediate response of helpers is to provide food, water, healthcare and other basic necessities for survival for them.

Examples of how displacement affects education.

· More than 4.4 million children of primary and lower secondary school age (between 5 and 14 years old) are at risk of having their education affected by internal displacement in sub-Saharan Africa.

· At least three million children internally displaced by conflict or violence are at risk of being out of school across 13 sub-Saharan African countries because they are not receiving educational support. (Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC).

After getting a permanent location to stay (usually called an Internally Displaced People’s Camp) educational structures are then set up for children. However, there are certain challenges faced in these educational institutions and we would be looking at that in our next read which you definitely do not want to miss.
