Four alternative ways people can consider to make the desire of having a child more approachable
In our age of development and technology, there seem to be almost no limits. That’s why even infertile couples, new couple constellations, etc. still have the chance to have children. The medicine of the 21st century offers a variety of other opportunities and alternative ways — and I’m only going to inform you about a few of them:
- Artificial Insemination
Artificial insemination has the function to fertilize a women with the help of medicine. There are a few different methods depending on the woman’s and her partner’s condition. Here is a short explanation of the three most common one’s:
One of the best known, and mostly used is the In-Vitro Fertilization. In the process of In-Vitro Fertilization the egg of the woman gets fertilized with the sperm of the men inside a test tube. As soon as it’s fertilized it’s ready to be inserted into the women’s body.
Another technique is Intrauterine Insemination which is mainly applied when the reasons for infertility are caused by the man’s health. The seminal fluid gets inserted into the women’s body to fertilize with her eggs.
A third technique is the In-Vivo Fertilization. It’s a process, starting quite similar like the In-vitro Fertilization, with the difference that the fertilized eggs grow in the uterus of the woman and not in the test tube. The In-Vivo Fertilization is also called the most “natural“ technique of artificial insemination.
Even though, people need to consider that all these techniques of artificial insemination have never a 100% guarantee of success, it’s still a very developed option where research is continuously working on.
2. Sperm Bank
The sperm bank is a central point where tested men can donate their fertile sperms. It’s not only a good opportunity for single woman, but also for couples where the infertility is caused by the men’s health, or gay couples which need a sperm donation to fulfill their desire of having a child.
Some constraints need to be considered: The sperm bank is not accessible for everyone. Every country has different laws and rules for the donation. By taking advantage of the sperm bank, people choose either between anonymous or public donors. Another really interesting fact is the chance to choose from different donors profiles which reveal the eye color, hair color, profession,…of the donor.
Additionally, we have surrogacy. It’s the process where a woman offers to carry out the baby of another woman and her partner or her sperm donor to the full term. There are different opportunities:
The woman who conceives the baby can be either inseminated artificially with the other woman’s and her partner’s sperms and eggs, or, if the woman who needs to fall back on surrogacy is infertile, the eggs of the surrogate mother can be used as well.
Surrogacy is especially in Europe legally forbidden, but many people consider countries in Asia, such as India, to find the right surrogate mother to carry out their child.
Not to forget to mention, it’s also a good opportunity if the health of your own body would be endangered by conceiving a child.
The last option I want to outline is adoption. Taking over custody and parenting for a child who’s in need of a family is also something really special not everybody is willing to do. It’s not only considered by couples who are not able to have kids on a natural way, but also by people who want to help a child. (Even if they might already have their own children.)
Although, adopting a child from the same or another country is a very long process which takes often over months or even years and many requirements, depending on the country and the law, need to be completed — It’s still a win-win situation for the potential parents and the child.
As you can see, there are many opportunities to try out before giving up on your desire. It’s almost possible for every one to have a child, either if it’s on a natural or alternative way. You just need to figure out the best option for yourself.
