Airbnb and the Promise of the Spare Bedroom
Nicole Dieker

I’m an Airbnb host in Chicago. We own a two flat and live on the first floor with our two year old. There’s a locked door between us and the entryway, but it’s pretty close quarters. I’ve never considered it unsafe with my kid around (put that on my tombstone). Renting out the top floor allows us to slowly renovate the building while living within our means. Our means did allow us to buy the building in the first place of course, but that was a stroke of luck as first time buyers at the bottom of the real estate market. We’ve had traditional tenants before but Airbnb is so much more money. We made around $25K in the past year. Is that enough for a dream business? It’s enough to pay for my kitchen reno that starts a week from today!
