Ledesma Audiological Center Inc. — How Does Hearing Aid Work

Basically, hearing aids are medical devices used by individuals who are hearing impaired. It is worn fitted in or on the ear to amplify sound. In addition to that, it can improve a person’s hearing ability, hearing comfort and speech recognition. Hearing aids can’t restore a person’s ability to hear, but it works the same way as the eyeglasses, which helps enhance a person’s eyesight.

There are different kinds of hearing aids. However, they all have the same key components — microphone, microchip, amplifier, battery and receiver.

The microphone is the one responsible for picking up the sound from the air and converting it into sound waves as it enters the ears. The sound waves then, passes through the amplifier, where it is strengthen and converted to vibration. After that, it pass through the inner ear and the brain.

On the other hand, the battery serves as the power source of the hearing aid, while the microchip helps tune and personalize the sound depending on the individual needs.

Furthermore, hearing aids are classified into two type of technology — analog and digital

The analog hearing aids amplify all sounds such as speech and noise. It works by making sound waves louder continuously. Furthermore, it is cheaper and, sometimes, much more powerful than the digital hearing aids, no wonder some users prefer this than the digital ones.

On the other hand, digital hearing aid has the same feature as analog hearing aid. The only difference between the two of them is the way they convert sound waves. Instead of just amplifying the sounds, digital hearing aids produces the exact same sound. It improves hearing aid function in certain environments, while reducing the background noise. It is also more flexible and adjustable for specific use.
