You make some good points however consider this.
- It’s bold so you see it, and has a clear icon showing it’s intent. There is no point offering interaction and hiding it away. Baring in mind that if designed correctly the FAB should contain the “main” action. The fact that it is not the main action of the Gmail app shows a design flaw with the app and not the FAB
- It’s actually quite simple to manage lists with FABs and the Gmail app on Android is a great example of this.
There is a lot to be said about relevance of the button in certain applications — especially the photo viewer but again this is a problem with the app’s design not necessarily the FAB
