I’m imagining you’re coming from a C# background or some such because depending on the language, comments are necessary.

Coming from a PHP/JavaScript backgroy’re absolutely vital and making sweeping generalisations like this is actually quite damaging. PHP in particular has a proposal to standardise the use of comments (PSR-8), and good luck making C/C++/Java/Assembly/etc. explanatory without comments.
