One interpretation of Facebook slapping Stories onto products in addition to Instagram is that it’s signaling to Snapchat that it will go to all-out war, even bloat its own products, to head off any new interest in Snapchat from its existing FB user base.

FB has been slow to respond to competitors in the past (e.g. Instagram and WhatsApp both whoever escape velocity such that they had to be acquired), and with Storied everywhere FB is showing that they will push endlessly to neutralize SnapChat.

An unintended consequences could be that they’re creating Story fatigue in their non-Instagram base, which makes users not interested in SnapChat Stories. “Facebook Messenger/WhatsApp/etc has Stories, and they’re not that good, so why would I bother with SnapChat?”
