Peter Ondreicka was a Slovak painter. There are very few if any articles about him in english and he isn’t well known even in Slovakia.

Peter loved to paint and he painted since childhood. He started using oil paints when he was only 10 years old. He was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci – you can see that in his paintings.

When he was teenager his father died of cancer and that left him deeply wounded.

Peter, unfortunately, suffered from depression and alcoholism. He died in 1990 and he was only 43 when his life partner and muse found him in the bathtub, dead because of heart failure.

He used to cut some of his failed artworks and then reattach them together again or he would just simply paint over pieces he didn’t like. He also used to giveaway his paintings so there are not many preserved pieces. Because of this, he had only few exhibitions so far.

An artist portrays himself through his art.

Ondreicka’s painting portrays himself and his traumatised self. Since he was an alcoholic and a depressed person, his paintings have colour palette which indicates melancholy and his own vision in which he saw himself, his condition and suffering. He portrays himself and his emotions through his artwork. His paintings have hallucinatory qualities which signifies that he might have been partially schizophrenic since he was a lonely person too as his father died when he was a teenager. His painting also indicates how he slowly-slowly disintegrated. His art style shows no evolution over time which indicates that he had a heavily disturbed mental condition and did not heal.

His inspiration being Leonardo Da Vinci shows that he wanted his artwork to be well known and he himself wanted to be a well known artist but he did not succeed in achieving his motives which led to his frustration and self disappointment which is portrayed on his reaction over his paintings which did not satisfy his expectations (tearing them apart and sometimes joining them and sometimes painting over them.

Above is his painting named “The prodigal son”

There is also a parable in bible named the prodigal son, the story of the prodigal son is a picture of God’s love for us as His children. God’s love for us does not depend on our faithfulness; it is unconditional. He loved us while we were still sinners. Though we are demanding and do not remain faithful, God is still our faithful and loving Father. Ondreicka’s painting “The prodigal son” which describes that he might have liked the same parable from

Bible and painted it and even might have had some guilt regarding something that he did which might’ve made him feel relatable to this parable.

In conclusion, this analysis and information has provided us with valuable insights about Ondreicka.
