UQR2215 Developing meaningful indicators

What have I done so far

in quantifiable terms, I have completed:
1. 2 Reddit post (one on happiness score and one on tinder profile names)
2. 5 medium posts (comics, dataisbeautiful and happiness)
3. 1 tutorial (stata)
4. New skills (excel & R)

Throughout these 5 weeks, I have attempted to give a social science take on the dataset that has been allocated to us. I went into this module with 3 goals:

  1. to define meaningful at every turn :
This is interesting as the definition of meaningful is highly contestable.
    - the magnitude of the statistics?
    - the audience’s subjective take?
  2. to curate accurate indicators to the best of my abilities, I would go about doing this by
    - reading up on the broad topic
    - clearly defining the cornerstones of my chosen content
    - defining and cleaning my variables
  3. to learn more about different tools (programming, statistics, data analytics)

Moving forward

ideation

With each topic, I hope to scope the field from a unique perspective. Be it introspective, retrospective, macro or micro. Ideally, each project shall start off with an initial big idea which then can be complemented with data.

value add= data + critics

This can come in different forms. Technically, I can
1) derive my own dataset
2) clean
3) put it into data visualisation

More importantly, I believe that it is important to be critical of the idea and data used. Hopefully, at every stage of each project, I am able to evaluate each segment and provide useful insights!

utility maximisation

At the end of this course, I hope to make use of all the opportunities presented to me. The autonomy in this class to learn boundlessly is unique to this module. Ideally, with the resources and collaboration, I will be able to gain the most from the module.

  1. Application: This module provides me with limitless opportunities to apply my statistical and social science knowledge. I can use this as a platform to build up my portfolio as an Arts/Economics/USP student.
  2. Being an economics student, data is something valuable to my course of study. Through this class, I learn data analytics skill sets beyond STATA and develop a more critical, creative and panoptic way of thinking.
  3. Exposure: This class allows us to receive feedback from the prof, our peers and the public. Moving forward I hope to continue to learn and adapt accordingly to the critics and better my own personal portfolio!

Undeniably, meaning is highly subjective. I hope to continue to put out work that I find meaningful! And hopefully, others will too!

Enough said! I will strive to put whatever I’ve said here into action! LEt’s gET thIS breAD! & Do oUR MoST! & never EVER be an idiot sandwich!

Thanks for reading! :-)
