I am a single parent, who also happens to have a permanent disability. It is not just the disability system that is broken. My daughter is also mildly disabled and I am eligible for a carers payment for her, but for that I would need to give up my single parent pension — which means I loose child care benefits for my son who is not disabled. Then there are disabilities or issues simply not covered at all and should be — a friend has a young child who is so anaphalytic allergic to diary that he almost died simply walking into a daycare that had milk. So she had to quit her job seeing as her child can’t go to daycare. But food allergies are not covered under disability.

It is not just disability payments where they make things so hard that you just give up. 3 hours on the phone simply to get hung up on, or not getting through at all. It took them 8 months to even review my claim for carers allowance.

And don’t get me started on when they make a mistake. One coding error that was their fault and you get slapped with thousands of dollars in debt.

I’ve always said that the Liberals have it backwards — and in many cases so too does Labor. Give extra money to the poor and disabled, and we will spend it so fast the economy will be stimulated much faster than any company tax break could ever do.
