From SAHM to WAHM: How to Make it Work?

My transition from SAHM to WAHM has turned out to be more challenging, exhausting and exciting than I expected but with the right mindset and support, I had eventually gotten the hang of it.

Let me share with you 5 tips on how you can be a WAHM from being a SAHM.

  1. Begin with a self-assessment.

What is your objective for working? Is it for the additional wage? Do you miss engaging with other adults or you want a feeling of achievement?

Who are you doing this for? Is it for self-satisfaction, money related commitment to the family?

Where do you want to work? Would you like to be in the same industry as before or you want to venture into a new career?

How would you like to work? Do you want to be a part-time freelancer or a full-time employee?

When you answer these questions, you’ll have a vastly improved feeling of your identity, what you need, and how to get it.

2. Choose Wisely.

Most moms want jobs that are flexible enough to accommodate family duties. The career you once had might not be the same as the career that you’re going to pursue as a WAHM so planning ahead can help you choose a job that works best for you and your family.

3. Connect with fellow WAHMS.

“Empowered women, empower women” The transition might not be easy when you’re starting out, so a tap from a co-momma could mean a lot.

4. Use your motherhood skills as an asset.

One of the most frightening phase about returning to work as a mother is the gap on your resume. Most moms thought they have lost their competence. But as a stay-at-home mother, you have learned a lot of skills you never thought you can do.

These skills could be connected to the skills required in the job description or to the expertise you had from your previous jobs. Just make sure to translate your experiences so they’d make sense to a potential client. Don’t make assumptions that they’ll form the connection on their own.

5. Plan ahead.

Getting back to work could be as exciting but don’t forget you have little humans depending on you. Balancing our time with kids, work, and marriage is a struggle we all share. It is extremely hard to part your time in a way that feels reasonable and fair. So list down all your weekly plans, set boundaries and prioritize rest.

The key to making the transition from SAHM to WAHM is to know what you exactly need. The toughest part of it is to take action. The sooner you start, the faster you’ll be in achieving your goals.
