A photo essay to honor the day General Martín Miguel de Güemes in Salta, Argentina.

June 17th. Guemes Day.

The day starts with a parade going past el monumento Guemes. The man himself cast on his horse at the top of a mountain.

All the gauchos come from miles to take part in the parade, and each fire department, police and local citizens group march together. They wear uniforms in bright colors, marching around the city and heading to the Guemes momument. There in front of Guemes on his horse sit the dignitaries, including Gobernador Urtubey — he won the election, by the way. They stand with applause.

Urtubey is the one in the middle, wearing his poncho. Here is he in front of the Guemes Monument, the focal point of this entire day.
