Hi Marie, great piece and very exciting to see The Economist sharing their behind-the-scenes work on dataviz. Bit of a random and seemingly trivial question in the great scheme of things, but I’ve always been curious about the top-left corner square that accompanies many of The Economist’s graphs. Where did come from? Why is it there? It makes charts instantly recognisable, but is it there purely for attribution (and I feel it started in print, so attribution would’ve been less of a problem)? Also, crucially: does it have a name?
