Thanks, Ben. I’m in agreement with you! I want to plan some one day hikes on the Rivanna Trail, which circumnavigates Charlottesville, and has an entry about a block from my apartment. The scenery is beautiful, there would be very little in the way of danger, as a quarter mile off the trail anywhere, a taxi or bus could take us home, or a hospital, in 10 minutes top. That is the gist of most of the hiking I do now, sans pack or m0untainside. I think for a while doing this now-familiar trail with a pack filled with intentions of a picnic, trail repair, and photography would be a great way for my son and I to gain some pack hiking chops. Thanks for your kind feedback, and always-good advice.
