A pseudonym goes a long way toward mediating anonymity or no identity on one hand and putting up a shingle with your family’s name on the other. It’s a different set of friends we’re talking about, pseudonym’s friends versus real identity’s actual, but you’re known either way.

I learned this technique when a journalist wrote an early essay about blogs and how many bloggers were schoolgirls who chose cute names in order not to be stalked. My blogging got better after that.
