Independence Day (from balks)
Joe Posnanski

With all due respect, these are all terrible ideas. The balk is clumsy but necessary. If you want baseball played without balk issues, watch a game of softball. No balks, no leadoffs either, but there is stealing. Very different game for it. I thought the balk rule was a bit zany until I started umpiring youth baseball. High school balk rules make the pros look simple in comparison. Bill James’ idea would kill base running, as would any more of an advantage given to the pitcher. Soccer has rules in effect that prevent trickery and there is nothing wrong with such rules in the game. If you want a game that allows all kinds of slight of hand and such nonsense, you are barking up the wrong sport.
