Remote work: my experience + 3 myths about copywriting

For the last few years (already 5, omg!) I earn money by writing texts, mostly. Articles, long reads and many more. I do not take doubtful orders.

According to statistics, copywriting is the most popular freelance/remote work. It’s good on the one hand and bad on the other hand. Good because people always need to write something. Bad because of not everyone ready to pay well for this job. Especially if you’re on the outsource. Talking about this I talk about my reality as a freelance writer in Russia.

During all these years I observed a lot of things: bad writers, mean clients, low-paid orders and etc. Now I want to share with you some mine observations. So, here are 3 myths about copywriting on my opinion:

1Everyone can be a copywriter

Nah, don’t think so. If you had fingers and you can make words using letters, and make sentences using words doesn’t mean that copywriting is your best option for making money. But everyone should write without mistakes. It’s definitely one of the most important basic skill.

2Typical content scheme and patterns works

A few years ago you can cheat on your subscribers using all these tricks like clickbait headers and questions in the end. But now these typical posts are so boring and looks the same (I talking about Instagram). It’s impossible to write a good article without using a part of your soul. Tell stories that are you wondering about.

The amazing article doesn’t have subscribers. It has a reader, which deserves respect.

3Writing paid well

It can be the truth. But mostly — not. Depends on your skill and experience. The beginning copywriters after Instagram blogger’s 3-months course go straight to the freelance platforms looking for the orders. Usually, they place a low price for attracting more clients. Some clients, in turn, who doesn’t want to pay much, give preference to the beginner copywriter because of the price. That’s how good authors with amazing skills lose potential big orders.

It can look like a loop. But here is the way out — a personal brand. The writer can make a lot of money. I still on the way to “golden peaks”, but I believe that it’s possible.

If you want to be a high-paid author you should create a strong personal brand and follow the next thing:

3W-rule: write, write and write.
