I’m retired now, and your vivid account nicely revived memories of writing a business story on deadline at The Providence (RI) Journal-Bulletin more than four decades ago. It was about a labor dispute, and I knew that every word I wrote would piss off or delight either management or the union. Which meant the only safe strategy was to get every single word right—no shortcuts, no suggesting I understood something that still baffled me and no time to make one more phone call to help figure it out. All that and knowing I was way late for a dinner at our house, with the guests waiting. An excruciating, ecstatic pressure cooker of mind versus the clock: ah, how I miss it!
