Compromise and Relationships
They say relationships are all about compromise, but it’s important to not compromise your individuality either. Those little quirks and preferences are likely what attracted your mate in the first place.
Today my fiance and I were cooking dinner together. It was a baked chicken casserole of sorts. All the ingredients were to our mutual liking except for two: mushrooms and onions. I dislike mushrooms, Katie dislikes onions.
So we stood side by side using separate frying pans sautéing our respective preference. It struck me as an interesting metaphor.
Our disagreement on these particular elements did not prevent the dish from being made. We composed the overall dish, then placed mushrooms on half the dish, onions on the other. Besides the stink (Katie’s words) that the onions created while they baked, we ended up having a delicious meal that worked for both us.
Compromise is critical for a successful relationship. Keeping your individuality is too. Try to find moments where these things don’t need to be mutually exclusive.
