Like you I have years of experience working both sides of the fence (gig/contract vs. W-2) and most people (myself included) when given a choice would rather work in a stable organization where the work is fulfilling and you have a benefit structure. However this is just another movement by large companies (and Mom & Pop ones too) to shift legacy costs away from the traditional employer over to the employee.
