Let’s get started with the IBM Cloud.

--

Cloud computing is all the rage but where do you start? In the case of the IBM Cloud we start by registering for a free account. That is right, IBM Cloud has a free tier and all you have to do to register for a free account is to click on the URL https://cloud.ibm.com/registration, enter your email address and you’re in. No credit card required!

Once we have registered we get access to the free IBM Cloud Lite account which never expires. Meaning, you can build smart, connected apps with the best of IBM Cloud for free for as long as you like.

Let’s take a look at the Lite account.

How is the Lite account different from paid accounts? The Lite account is quota-based, which means your usage of the services is capped to a quota. This way, you don’t accidentally run up a bill while you’re learning about Watson or developing an app that’s not ready for production. When you’re approaching the limit or hit the quota, we notify you so you can take the appropriate actions.

After you create your Lite account, hit the ground running by hosting your apps with 256 MB of Cloud Foundry runtime memory and 2 GB with Kubernetes clusters.

Add intelligence to your apps with Watson services. You can even combine Watson with the Watson IoT Platform to build cutting edge solutions. You’ll also have access to API Connect, Push Notifications, Availability Monitoring, and more.

For a list of free IBM Cloud services, see this list and for a full list of all IBM Cloud services, see this URL .

So how do we navigate the IBM Cloud Console? The video below will tells us how.

Now let’s look at how we develop apps in the IBM Cloud:

Getting started on IBM Cloud consists of a series of ten-minute tutorials that allows you to begin to create interesting apps such as Provision a bare metal server, Provision a virtual server, Provision a Kubernetes Cluster, Create buckets and upload objects, Add data to a NoSQL database. Create a virtual assistant, Convert speech to text, Connect to an IoT device and Set up a blockchain network.

From here you can go on with advance your skills.

The IBM Cloud is also part of the Hybrid Cloud concept:

So a rapidly evolving story with an easy way to get started.
