An interesting notification pattern I saw with Duolingo:
Automatically stop sending a certain notification type, if its noticeable the user nearly never interacts with it.
E.g.: in a shopping app, when you notice your user only opens the notifications about the “recommended products”, then stop sending him the notifications about “daily offers” and “new products”.
You could still display them in-app, but at least you don’t bother the user when he’s not in the context of the app.
This approach works as a fallback, for the user that’d be too lazy to change the apps notification settings.
Duolingo does the same with their mails by the way.
