Sounding you out

An exploration of sound in writing

Welcome to an unfolding online exploration of the art and craft of writing.

Sound the trumpets! We’re kicking off with an invitation to explore SOUND as an inspiration for writing.

I’d like to invite you to come and dance in a landscape of silence — to engage in a sound dance — to tiptoe skip, gambol with the consonants; to sway, slide, flow with the vowels.

Here’s Carol Michelon’s illustration for the theme of SOUND.

An imaginative illustration by Carol Michelon, evocative of the moment before inspiration is realised in sound — a head, emerging from a block of earthy wood suspended in mid-air, steam coming from an open mouth, a VR set over the eyes, against an abstract desert landscape.
SOUND — an illustration by Carol Michelon

You’ll be able to hear more about what inspired her in this short YouTube video.

This month’s competition task is to write a 200-word story that has some connection to Carol Michelon’s illustration and shows off your ability to reference, or feature SOUND in your writing in some way.

That’s 200 words, not 199, not 201.

Each month, one writer will win a $10 Amazon Gift Card, and a free eBook. Winner aside, there are special prizes for the first 50 entrants and free gifts for all subscribers.

Deadline: Midnight on Sunday 25th March 2022 GMT.

Details, submission link, and T&Cs on my website at www.leonconrad.com/contest.

Why SOUND?

Sound is the basis of everything we do.

Sound emerges from silence — it is of one being with silence. It emerges in and of it.

Sound is the closest we can get to silence.

And silence is the fount of inspiration.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing thoughts with subscribers on Substack about how we use sound as writers, along with a technical exercise related to the theme. I look forward to engaging in a discussion on Substack or in The Unknown Storyteller Facebook group about the theme and the exercise and any thoughts that might emerge for you as a result of working with them. Sign up to my newsletter on Substack to avoid missing out!

All the best -

Leon
