being lazy is definitely within anyone’s rights — I am not suggesting otherwise. But the thing I notice is that the other side of the coin is often never even brought up (or just mildly glossed over) when discussing UBI —how such a wealth transfer system is paid for. I couldn’t care less if person A chooses to sit around all day instead of trying to better their life, I have an issue with forcing person B in order to pay for the choices that person A makes.
So, you said “one might argue that it is within anyone’s rights to not work if they are receiving basic income”… I agree, BUT, it is NOT within their rights to receive Basic Income provided by others through force, whether or not they choose to work, play, sleep, or whatever. I understand being lazy, oftentimes I myself could be considered quite ‘lazy’ by others (the term ‘lazy’ is not an objective fact, it is a subjective, relative, and arbitrary judgement)… it is merely a choice of what to do with one’s own time and life. Obtaining the property of others by force is something that should not be built into a civilized society, lazy or not.
