I can’t find fault with Taleb’s description of the EU as an economic counterbalance to China and the U.S.: The European Union started as the European Coal and Steel Community. And pretty much all of the EU regulations concern trade.

(There is the European Court for Human Rights, of course, which one might see as a testament to a “greater goal” than just economic competitiveness. But this institution is independent from the E.U..)
