This is such a hard one for white people; my (white) daughter wanted cornrows for so long, and explaining to a 5yo why this isn’t appropriate took a watching of “Good Hair” and more than one conversation. It’s interesting to watch the reactivity to these scenarios — check out the comments here:
The “white fragility” default to attack people whose initial discomfort make *us uncomfortable is, to be sure, the flip side of the unearned entitlement our systems are architected to protect. Hopefully, these kinds of conversations can continue to help us white folks open our eyes, ears, and hearts to understanding that making everything about us just isn’t the right thing to do.
