Top Five In Film: Denzel Washington
With a legacy so inspirational that parents name their children after him, Denzel Washington has solidified his position in Hollywood as one of it’s highest paid leading men. His resume is a collection of works that speaks for itself; here are my top five favorite Denzel Washington films in very particular order!
A devoted husband, and father, takes extreme measures to obtain an organ transplant, and life-saving surgery for his dying son in this award-winning all-star packed film. Denzel won an NAACP Image Award in the Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture category for his powerful performance, and it is an emotional one. Alongside Denzel’s performance in the film, are equally impressive works from Robert Duvall, Kimberly Elise, and James Woods.
Based on the real life of 1970s New York City gangster Frank Lucas, American Gangster loosely chronicles Lucas’ life, and how he became one of the United States’ most notorious drug kingpins by smuggling heroin into the states via US military transport. Portraying the real-life Frank Lucas, Denzel gives us a stellar performance that’s timeless to this day. You can watch American Gangster here
An inspiring true story of the undefeated Virginia high school football team at T.C. Williams High School (now known as Alexandria City High School), in Alexandria, Virginia, and how they chose to navigate racial integration in the city’s segregated school system. Denzel portrays real-life Coach Herman Boone, and his performance lead to awards to Denzel for Best Actor, and Outstanding Motion Picture in the (NAACP) Image Awards. Fun fact about me: i’m a former athlete, and remember the Titans is one of my favorite movies. After watching this movie, I considered T.C. Williams High School at the time to be a very prestigious, and famous high school of former athletes — one that I’d be happy to tour, visit, or attend, so naturally I was thrilled to take the SAT at the landmark location in eleventh grade; it was a very cool day.
It’s rare to find a film with an undeniable on-screen chemistry between two actors-especially when the dynamic is between an adult and a child. Man On Fire successfully accomplishes that chemistry with Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning in this high intensity crime-drama with an adrenaline rush. We also get to see Marc Anthony in one of his rare (but amazing) acting roles. You’re sure to get emotional watching Denzel’s performance- I certainly did. Watch it now with a 7-day free trial!
One of the greatest performances ever delivered by Denzel Washington, and my favorite of all his films, to date. It could be because I’m a former athlete, and a culturally proud, and competitive nature runs through me!! It’s for certain my favorite Denzel Washington film because it’s the story of the life of a man that was wronged for decades, but never gave up the fight for his life; and that’s awe-inspiring asl to me.
