Finding love online is a method that’s growing in popularity which allows you to meet new people from all over the world, including those that might have similar things in common with you — or simply offer a particular ‘spice’ or level of ‘pizzazz’ to your life that you don’t currently have.

People are turning to the internet more frequently in their search for romance, as sites like OKCupid, EHarmony, Christian Singles, and seemingly thousands of other online dating sites appear on the net — many reaching globally.

In many cases — especially for men — dating and finding a woman abroad to marry seems to be an extremely popular, growing trend. However, with such a new form of love and discovery, also includes — inevitably — its share of “love risks”, scams, or manipulators.

So, we’ve compiled a Top 5 List below on how and why to avoid online scams when searching for your future love on the internet!

1. Be very wary of any man or woman that you’ve just met on a dating site who seem to INSIST that you communicate through another application or service- for example free texting Apps like WhatsApp, Skype, etc. That is, as many of these mobile or PC platforms can be used to transmit viruses, or serve as an outlet for scammers to ‘feel more comfortable’ in attempting to manipulate and scam you out of your money.

2. Verify where photos are taken, and where people say they are from. There are various methods you can use to do this, with the most recently popular and growing method being through Google, which you can use to either check for “stock-images” (for sale) similar to those you receive from your new “crush,” — or simply by drag-and-dropping images in the search engine to find similar pictures used across the internet.

3. Are you curious about your new love interest, and whether or not they are who they say they are? Consider searching their name — via the local state they say they are from — through court records and arrest records databases to determine whether or not they might just be a dangerous individual.

4. Try to avoid people asking for “donations” or “emergency funds.” It would seem like nine times out of 10 these are always scams, and nothing more than predators only playing off of the emotions of those that might be new to the “online dating game” or using the internet in general.

5. Don’t ever accept Facebook requests from people you don’t know– unless you’re a gambling man and don’t mind the risks associated with such unwitting behavior.

In general, there are many ways to protect yourself online, especially when it comes to online dating. A general Google search of someone’s name in most instances will lead to their social networking profile page, or even employment history via sites like LinkedIn. Truly the possibilities are endless.

So, just take your time, use your common sense, and when in doubt, don’t hesitate to go and ask for advice.
