A Ticket To Thrive from Big Fish Little Fish
Welcome to our #TicketToThrive campaign. We believe wholeheartedly that doing something creative with your child will benefit you both. We’ve asked some other people who believe in the power of creativity to talk a little about a benefit they have seen when families get creative, and to suggest a simple activity that you can do at home. Today, we hear from Hannah, founder of Big Fish Little Fish.
Tell us about Big Fish Little Fish: BFLF is a family rave. A fun, quirky event designed to please both clubbing parents and their little ones. Held in licensed venues from fabric to the National Gallery it’s heart is the multi-sensory dancefloor with bangin’ tunes plus crafts, chill and play areas and lots of random daftness. I set it up 6 years ago as I am an old raver who enjoyed taking my babies to festivals but could find nothing like that sense of freedom and togetherness in regular parent and baby groups. So I set about creating it myself – to take my own family to.
Ticket to Thrive is all about encouraging families to do something creative together. What do families gain from coming to your events? There’s nothing like seeing all the generations dancing together to acid house. techno and drum and bass. Sharing a love of dance music and even teaching a few moves (in both generational directions!). We theme each event eg space or pirates, and seeing the costumes people attend in is always wonderful as is watching parents and children work together in the themed craft area. People have told us it is ‘the best thing we do together as a family’ and one mum of a child with ASD said that after attending one of our events her som held her hand for the first time.
How can families get those same benefits at home? There’s always a chance of a kitchen rave. Pop on a BFLF mix (from our Mixcloud page) and throw some shapes. Community on the dancefloor – can happen anywhere with at least two people and some beats.
