Nice observations, thank you! I think your point about “superstar” authors is a crucial point — the difference in inventory from one indie shop to the next allows for all sorts of discoverability in all sorts of environments. A centralized algorithm based on sales, consistent from one store to the next and consistent with its online discoverability algorithms, will only weaken a consumer’s ability to discover new titles. It will also limit the kinds of books that publishers will be willing to take on. It wouldn’t be a good day for readers, writers, or ideas in general.
