Last night, 50 people were shot to death in a nightclub in Orlando, FL.

There are individuals in my life who decidedly refuse to acknowledge the existence of any sexual orientation besides heterosexual. They’re disgusted by the very topic. And that’s precisely the kind of thinking that led to last night. It sickens me that I cannot go to these people, whom I love, and share a moment of sympathy for the fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, brothers, and sisters of the 50 victims who were killed last night. At least, I can’t do so without the matter turning into a nonsensical exchange about whether gay people are actually gay or whether it’s a choice to be homosexual.

Let me settle that debate right now: they are and it isn’t. Any fucking questions? If so, keep them to yourselves and read on.

This is my plea to those of you who may still be “unsure” about how you “feel” about “the gays,” even after last night’s terrorist attack: shut the fuck up. Change. Evolve. Nobody needs to hear your holier-than-thou evaluation of a whole population of human beings. Gay people are not sinners, they are not infidels, and they are not sodomites. They are PEOPLE.

Unlock the damn chastity belt you’ve secured so snugly around your mind that prevents the influx of new ideas. Take a confident stand against religious fundamentalism, bigotry, and violence. Dismiss the clear sense of moral superiority that you’ve bestowed upon yourselves, and realize that we are all equal, and that we all equally deserve basic human rights.

That’s all, thank you for reading. My thoughts are with those affected by this tragedy.
