Where are the warning signs of decline, in the United States, where, this election notwithstanding, the second most anticipated event among tens of millions of Americans is the debut (by Apple) of the latest version of the iPhone? Where is the decline in technology and engineering in a country with some of the world’s top colleges and universities? Where is the impending armed revolt against the federal government by a charismatic figure with a private security force sufficient to depose the U.S. military, seize control of Congress and enact a modern-day equivalent of the Nuremberg Laws?
Where, in a continental nation of 320 million Americans of every conceivable range of religious and ideological beliefs, is the Great Silent Majority willing to abet the fast undoing of the First Amendment and the criminalization of the Second?
Where is the decline in our “soft power,” as Hollywood remains a global money-maker and Silicon Valley continues to attract entrepreneurs and investors of every race and hue?
Where are the elected officials ready to consign the principle of judicial review to the ash-heap of history, as mob rule supplants the integrity of the U.S. Supreme Court and chants — and cries — for blood displace due process of law?
Where, in these forty-eight contiguous states, in addition to the Hawaiian archipelago and the vast land mass of Alaska, tell me, where are the visible signs of fascism in a republic that stretches from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean to the sands of the Pacific?
Where, in this gross act of political amnesia that bears your name and displays your accusatory finger, is the decline that engulfs America and feeds the forces of fascism?
Where, sir, is your sense of decency?
