Being a Transgender, Feminist Guy in the Tech Space
As I make the switch over to being a design/development writer (from my previous existential writing in a past life), I have long debated whether it would be safe to disclose that I, a male-identified feminist, was born female and have been on my transitional journey for the last year and a half.
There was once a time where I only wrote with complete transparency and then I became afraid. Because the tech industry as a whole is made up of white, cisgender men and the role of diversity is quite slim. This should come as no surprise to anyone who has been paying attention that the strong, brave women in the tech space have had enough and are demanding the equal treatment that they deserve.
But I suppose it is that topic that makes it even more important for me to step forward as a queer, feminist, transgender person. Because diversity is the key to growth and progress. And people who are being open and proud about who they are matters.
We, as a whole, deserve the richness that diversity offers. The unique experiences of every individual can color problem-solving, creative ideas, and business solutions in the best of ways.
Ultimately, it came down to this simple question, “Would I want to work with people who didn’t accept me for who I am?”
And the answer was a resounding no.
And after reading this article, I realized that it was my duty to be open and honest because that’s the only way progress can happen.
It’s the only way that feminist can stop being a dirty word to a lot of people and give women the respect and recognition they deserve.
It’s the only way of making sure that people can’t get fired for being transgender (which is legal in 34 states in America).
So I’m stepping out and stepping up because I don’t want to be afraid anymore. I want to do meaningful work that I’m proud of. I want to create cool shit, connect with awesome people, and work to make sure there is a safe space for anyone that doesn’t fit into the “prerequisite” of being a straight, white, cisgender man in the tech space.
