Senator Richard C. Shelby, a Presbyterian Christian, was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on May 6, 1934. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama and attended the University of Alabama School of Law where he graduated in 1963 and upon passing the bar, practiced law in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Senator Shelby has represented Alabama in Congress for 33 years.

He has served as the Tuscaloosa city prosecutor from 1963–1971, and United States Commissioner for the Northern District of Alabama 1966–1970 and served as for the Alabama State senate 1970–1978. He switched party affiliations in 1994, where he switched from a Democrat to a Republican member of the U.S. Senate. He is currently serving his sixth term as a Republican senator for the state of Alabama and his Democrat opponent is Senator Doug Jones.

Senator Shelby has voiced his opinions on key political issues including abortion, education and gun control. He voted “YES” for defending unborn children, for addition money for education systems, prohibiting restrictions of US gun ownership and for prohibiting same-sex marriage. As a Republican, Senator Shelby has voted for the rights and liberties that he believes are important and just for the people of his home state in Alabama.
