The Astronaut
The First Light
The sky grew dark, the moon introduced the night.
He always admired that first spark, the stars that he could sight.
Shining ever so brightly in the absence of light.
Wondering why people looked to the ground,
when it was only pulling them down.
He was optimistic, had a vision.
No matter what people told him.
People saw it, when they walked passed him.
Chin up, reaching for the stars, and wishing.
Earth was only a planet, but that never stopped Apollo’s mission.
Riding far into the fields, the horse was kicking.

Family stopped by, but that was not enough, he was filled with ambitions.
The dream to strap up, raise his voice and repeat, “I am ready Houston.”
Join the legends, those that prepared and went further up than people imagined.
Discover a new place, leave a mark, create a name for his children.
The monitor beeped, trapped in his dreams.
He had more to see, but was shaken from his sleep.
They screamed, smacked his chest, and dropped to his feet.
Mumbling sounds, gibberish, nothing was clear.
Escaping the big blue sea, floating past the atmosphere.
The grips of life, the fight, he did not believe in defeat.
They threw the towel, walked away, it was a miserable hour.
Did the best they could, all the tools, procedures, it was now up to will-power.
His chin still up, back tilted forward, closed eyes, in a forty- five degree angle.
They all stood and waited patiently, silence took over, as emotions were tangled.
The little girl came up to him, tears rolled off her face, held his hand and whispered.
“Remember, you said that life was a never ending battle?
and how you always have to get back up and onto the saddle.”
