Forced Birth

Even before Roe v. Wade, the concept of abortion has been very contentious in the US and throughout the world. In recent years, the Republican Party has become more aggressive. One can imagine this is because despite a conservative SCOTUS in the 80s and 90s, conservative justices were still unable to completely undo Roe. So, what is the response? Create new restrictions of course!

This week though, we have seen a new level of absurdity from the “new” Republican Party aka Trumpism. You can read about it here: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/features/trump-admin-tries-to-block-abortion-for-undocumented-teen-w509822

This is quite possibly one of the most absurd actions from the Trump administration that isn’t gathering a lot of attention. It is absurd for many reasons:

  1. Immigrants have constitutional rights in the United States: http://www.politifact.com/florida/statements/2017/mar/29/florida-immigrant-coalition/do-undocumented-immigrants-have-constitutional-rig/
  2. The administration doesn’t want the mother here, but it wants the mother’s child here? Doubtful.
  3. If they don’t want either here, they’re not exactly “pro life” but are pro forced birth. They want this mother to give birth against her will. She asked for an abortion, they’re trying to block her right to have one.

Immigration issues aside, this is another step in the wrong direction from the Republican Party. If pregnant women cannot opt into an abortion by legal means, it is very likely that illegal and dangerous means will surface. This is both sexist and short sighted. Please share this story as it doesn’t seem to be getting the attention it deserves.
