Inevitable Destruction
A dull white sky cast a cold light over the muted tones of the surroundings. All was silent. The odd bird broke the still scene; small black bodies glaring down from their grey world. The birds appeared to be the only movement in this dying set, from the girl’s point of view. She stared up into the sky, imagining the immense possibilities of the huge earth she inhabited. These dreams and hopes were clouded by the arriving winter, panic had set in as her only true companion began to shrivel away. She wished her misery would drift away as easily as the dead leaves did from the weak branches, but knew they’d only come back as the months rolled in. An endless cycle. She questioned how it could be broken- how she could keep the bright flowers and rays of light cascading through a canopy of green, yet still let go of the old, the past, when that time of year came back round to bite once again. The lowest point drew closer and closer, the air freezing everything it could envelop and the strict hands forcing the inevitable to arrive what seemed like quicker than it should.
She forced her eyes shut- she tried to imagine the lush greenery of summer and the ease of the familiar warmth, but it was not enough, for she would always have that crippling reminder being crowed in her head by the ebony birds, the chilling winds threatening the delicate branches and the numbers counting down.
