Licensed Producers System Growing with the Cannabis Industry in Canada
The cannabis industry in Canada is growing.
Legalized cannabis for medical uses has been available in Canada since 2001. Since then, federal regulations have evolved with two major changes to the industry. Perhaps the most profound was the change that led to the Licensed Producers system. Health Canada wanted a way to allow third-party companies to produce cannabis to keep up with demand. But it wasn’t about to just give away the keys — Licensed Producers undergo a comprehensive screening process of its facilities, its security measures, and even its own board members to ensure they are producing a safe, quality product.
Now that cannabis has been legalized for general adult use as of October 17, 2018, the need for such a strict system is even greater. The illegal — and unregulated — black market represents a significant threat to public health in several ways. For one, there is no way to know exactly what is in the products, what conditions it was grown under, or what modifications the cannabis underwent. In an age of genetic modifications and “lacing” with fentanyl and other dangerous substances, this is a real concern. Further, there is significant evidence to show that cannabis can affect the brains of developing children, which makes keeping cannabis out of the hands of our youth a top priority as well.
We believe in promoting a strong and safe cannabis industry in Canada. The purpose of the Licensed Producers Canada website is to support and provide information about the growing cannabis industry. As of August 31, 2018, there were 116 Licensed Producers in Canada, though that number continues to climb. We provide a listing of Licensed Producers in Canada, news relevant to the industry, and information aimed at industry players and the general public including our FAQ section. In an industry that is constantly changing in these formative years, our goal is to provide reliable, up-to-date information for our website visitors.
