The Cellphone Evolution…

On April 3, 1973, Martin Cooper who was a Motorola researcher and executive, made the first mobile telephone call from handheld subscriber equipment, placing a call to his rival at Bell Labs. The prototype offered a talk time of just 30 minutes and took 10 hours to re-charge.

Motorola DynaTac

1984

In 1984 and the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X was created, the world’s first commercially available portable cellular phone.

1997

In 1997, Nokia created the Nokia 3110 for consumers. It was the most popular phone during its time. This Nokia changed the cell phone design and the older bigger designs from the 1970’s and 1980’s were eliminated.

1999–2002

The Blackberry was first introduced in 1999, and by 2002, people were using the device for other features and business purposes, like emailing, printing faxing.

2003

In 2003 Motorola introduced a flip phone, with a cooler design then the Nokia. Motorola used the sleek design and color screen as selling points.

  • Facetime and Skype was also created in 2003!

2004

Motorola released the Razr flip phone in 2004. It was the best selling cellphone in the world to date. The thinnest most compact phone to on the market, the V3 model, Motorola’s first and main phone of the series, sold a total of 130 million phones in four years.

2005

In 2005, the Blackberry became even more powerful. The phone made improvements like Wi-Fi, had a much larger full-color screen and keyboard. I believe this is the time when people actually became “obsessed” with their cell phones.

2007

In 2007, the very first Apple iPhone hit the market. The iPhone combined three products — a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch screen controls and a breakthrough Internet communications device. It also introduced an entirely new interface of the “touch screen”, allowing users to control their iPhone with just their fingers. This revolutionized the cellular phone industry!

2016

In 2016, Apple released their new smart phone, the iPhone 7. It included a water-resistant body, a twin-lens setup that offers 2x optical zoom and up to 10x digital zoom for photos, wireless earbuds and the best performance and battery life, the new iPhone 7 made many improvements from prior models.

Currently, Apple has released newer models of the Iphone, including the Iphone 10 and X. It seems that every 3 months, a new cell phone model is released. The Samsung Galaxy releases new models to compete with the Apple Iphone. It is amazing that we have lived through a great evolution of mobile phones!
