No Compromise in the Age of Trump — The Line Must Be Drawn Here

We ARE Better Than This

Compromise.

It’s an innocuous enough word. I give a little and you give a little, and in the end, we have something we can both live with.

Except in the Age of Trump.

In the Age of Trump, Democrats and Progressive Independents cannot compromise. We tried that for eight years under President Obama. But what we got was years of racist rhetoric that started with Donald Trump starting the so-called “Birther” conspiracy.

He doesn’t have a birth certificate, or if he does, there’s something on that certificate that is very bad for him. Now, somebody told me — and I have no idea if this is bad for him or not, but perhaps it would be — that where it says ‘religion,’ it might have ‘Muslim.’ And if you’re a Muslim, you don’t change your religion, by the way.”

Of course, it didn’t stop there. Trump’s rhetoric included racist remarks about one of our closest neighbors.

And included citing violence against anyone that opposed him.

If this wasn’t bad enough, Trump also believes it’s okay to “Grab them by the pussy” because “And when you’re a star they let you do it”

This man — of all men — is our President. And that is why we are fighting. That is why there can be no compromise.

As Trump supporters wish that we would “give him a chance” and not Resist absolutely everything he wants to do, I know that some on the Left want us to try. In fact, a recent survey found that 73% of voters want to see Democrats work with the President.

Except I’m done with compromise. In the immortal words of Captain Jean-Luc Picard: “The line must be drawn here. This far, no further!”

They tried to disgrace Barack Obama because he was black or a closet Muslim (like being a Muslim was automatically bad). And still, we tried to work with them. They blocked every attempt Obama had for eight long years. We still tried to compromise. They voted for a man who wants to ban Muslims from our country. Who took us out of the Paris Climate Agreement. Who lies and says Obama “wiretapped” him in a Tweet. Who fired Director Comey because of the “Russia thing”.

And still, there are those who want us to try to work with Trump’s Republicans…

I used to be one of them. But no more. No more turning a blind eye to what Trump is clearly doing or what kind of person he is. No more making excuses for this despicable man just to get some damn tax breaks for the rich. No more attacks on the free press, our environment, or our own Intelligence Agencies.

No more denying the very words that come out of his mouth or from his Twitter account.

No more trying to work with anyone that does not stand with us against racism, authoritarianism, misogyny, and xenophobia. No more denying that what Trump did to President Obama wasn’t incredibly racist. No more working with those who defend the indefensible. No more attempts to make this all seem normal.

Because this is not normal.

I’m ready to work with anyone, from any side, to stop this insanity. But if we allow ourselves to compromise on our basic principles, to give one more inch in favor of Trump’s agenda, we only have ourselves to blame. Instead, it’s time to make our stand. To fight for the kind of America we want. And ironically, Make America Great Again.

The line must be drawn here. This far, no further.
