Steps to create raid 0 ZFS Pool

Proxmox: How to Create raid 0 ZFS Pool

Intro

As you know, raid 0 doesn’t provide the redundancy, so it’s not really recommended to use in general.

It means that with raid 0, one disk failure of many in the storage pool will cause losing data the whole data.

I created raid 0 ZFS Pool to experiment how it works.

Context

I have two HDDs ( 320GB each ) that were taken out from the old computers. ( took out around 10yr ago and never used them )

I tried to create raid 0 ZFS Pool with these two HDDs.

Reset / Delete Partitions in the two HDDs

Check disks through Proxmox UI

After I plugged in the two disks, I was able to see them through Proxmox UI. ( Their device names were /dev/sda and /dev/sdb )

Proxmox: Check the disks to create ZFS Pool

Check disk partitions

And, through Shell, I checked the list of devices and the partitions in the /dev/sda and /dev/sdb.

Proxmox: Check Partitions in the disks

Remove Partitions in disks by fdisk

By using fdisk, I removed all the existing partitions in /dev/sda and /dev/sdb

The below shows how the partitions in /dev/sdb were removed.

root@pve:~# lsblk /dev/sdb
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINTS
sdb 8:16 1 298.1G 0 disk
├─sdb1 8:17 1 39.2M 0 part
├─sdb2 8:18 1 13.2G 0 part
└─sdb3 8:19 1 284.9G 0 part
root@pve:~# fdisk /dev/sdb

Welcome to fdisk (util-linux 2.38.1).
Changes will remain in memory only, until you decide to write them.
Be careful before using the write command.

Command (m for help): d
Partition number (1-3, default 3):

Partition 3 has been deleted.

Command (m for help): d
Partition number (1,2, default 2):

Partition 2 has been deleted.

Command (m for help): d
Selected partition 1
Partition 1 has been deleted.

Command (m for help): d
No partition is defined yet!

Command (m for help): w

The partition table has been altered.
Calling ioctl() to re-read partition table.
Syncing disks.

root@pve:~# fdisk /dev/sdb

Welcome to fdisk (util-linux 2.38.1).
Changes will remain in memory only, until you decide to write them.
Be careful before using the write command.

Command (m for help):
root@pve:~# lsblk /dev/sdb
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINTS
sdb 8:16 1 298.1G 0 disk

Proxmox UI: Create raid 0 ZFS Pool

Initially, I tried to create the raid 0 ZFS Pool through Proxmox UI.

I thought that the option “Single Disk” is meant for raid 0, but it wasn’t.

When I tried to create a ZFS Pool with the two HDDs, it showed me an error message.

Proxmox UI: Create raid 0 ZFS Pool
Proxmox UI: Create raid 0 ZFS Pool — FAILED

Proxmox Shell: Create raid 0 ZFS Pool

The raid 0 ZFS Pool can be created successfully through Proxmox Shell.

( If your device name is different, then use one you have )

# zpool create <zfs-pool-name> [list of devices]
# In my case

zpool create exp-hdd-raid0 /dev/sda /dev/sdb
Proxmox Shell: Create raid 0 ZFS Pool — WORKS
Proxmox Shell: Create raid 0 ZFS Pool — WORKS

EXTRA: How to turn on S.M.A.R.T

Sometimes, the Disk S.M.A.R.T is not turned on.

The S.M.A.R.T can be turned on the device level like below.

root@pve:~# smartctl -a /dev/sda
smartctl 7.3 2022-02-28 r5338 [x86_64-linux-6.2.16-4-pve] (local build)
