Reflections after the first weeks

New arrival Marcus Tannerfalk blogs about his first two weeks at trivago (originally published on his Linkedin profile).

I have now been with trivago for two weeks, and so much fun has happened already! Starting with an on-boarding week in Düsseldorf, then spending a couple of days in my office in Palma and finally attending one of four major events/parties of the year: the trivago Update.

The growth and drive

I am super impressed with the organic growth that trivago has done, imagine just investing somewhere around 15 million Euro, and ending up with a 750 million Euro revenue after 11 years of work!

And trivago now employs almost 1300 persons, with an average age of 27. Which means that most of them is born in the late 80’s or 90’s, so you can absolutely not call them lazy or having lack of patience, as Simon Sinek did.

I would say that most of them are the opposite; super effective and massively creative!

The power of diversity

What really makes me happy is the diversity in the company, as an example, in my on-boarding group of 23 persons was there 18 different nationalities.

Tech really does not have any borders, those who are trying to create borders, will destroy creativity and growth in the whole world if they succeed. So please join me in doing whatever we can, to make that hard for them to do.

Core values and little hierarchy

trivago’s core values is just spot on, they could actually be a description of myself, trust, authenticity, power of proof, fanatic learning, entrepreneurial passion and unwavering focus.

One thing that really illustrates that they believe in authenticity was the “FYI” I got in every mail during the recruitment process:

We want you to be you, so feel free to wear whatever makes you comfortable and is just YOU!

For a company of this size, there is amazingly little hierarchy, and you can really talk and influence whom ever, even the six managing directors, if you want.

Lean and Agile

Last but not least, they are really striving to be as agile and lean as possible. Just the fact that they do not have a PMO but instead have the coaching-team I belong to, called Organizational Agility, says it all, to me at least.
