I laughed so hard because this immediately brought to mind a quote from the 18th century. Wish I had it here, but it was an (Anglo) American describing the character of Native Americans (“Indians”) and one comment was something like “The Indian is quick to anger when provoked but just as quickly goes back to normal.”

In other words, repressing emotions was and is largely a British/western European thing.
